A new exhibit honoring Hip Hop radio legend Kool D.J. Red Alert is being unveiled today (2/9) at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York. “The Red Alert Experience” celebrates Fred Crute aka Red Alert and his 45 years of service to Hip Hop as an iconic radio D.J. and personality as well as a legendary producer and all-around Hip-Hop icon. Red told CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis: “It’s not often that you find something that you love to do, and you make something out of it. Me and my man the late, great super rockin’ Mr. Magic, he was on the competitor station, the station that I’m on right now, WBLS.
“There was no radio in America that really cared about what was happening with Hip Hop culture. So, you have one of two humble giants who were on the radio” said exhibit co-creator Sean Williams. Williams continued “This was the birth of Hip-Hop radio. This was the importance of people staying at home on Friday nights and Saturday nights recording these broadcasts to cassette.”
Those cassettes traveled the United States and eventually the world, and have become collectors’ items over the last almost 4 decades. “I’m very proud of my journey,” says Red Alert.
The exhibit will officially be unveiled Wednesday morning and will remain open to the public until March 31st. The co-curators of the exhibit hope that it will inspire “Red Alert Day” to be celebrated on the first day that Red was on FM radio – October 19th. Along with “The Red Alert Experience” the exhibit will include a section called “Snapshot” which features never before seen photos by Hip Hop photographer Irving Pantin.
