Donald Glover recently spoke about mentoring Malia Obama, daughter of former President of the U.S. Barack Obama and former First Lady of the U.S. Michelle Obama.

Malia has worked with Glover for some time, including on his most recent project with Janine Nabers, Swarm.

“The first thing we did was talk about the fact that she will only get to do this once,” Glover told GQ magazine in an interview. “You’re Obama’s daughter. So if you make a bad film, it will follow you around.”

Fam Udeorji, Glover's creative partner at his new production company Gilga, also spoke about working with Malia. “Understanding somebody like Malia’s cachet means something. But we really wanted to make sure she could make what she wanted—even if it was a slow process.”

Glover explained the meaning of his company's name. Gilgamesh is the mythic Mesopotamian hero who angered the gods.

“Gilga is like [high-end supermarket] Erewhon for culture,” he said. “I want to work with the best people in every medium. To work toward sustainable output. The culture we’re getting from our phones is not high quality. It can be really good sometimes. And fun. But not necessarily high quality. Gilga is the filter for all of that.”

Beyond his TV interests, Glover said he has plans to make new music back in January. “I’m making music right now,” he said at the 2023 Golden Globes. “I love it. I’m actually working. I’m in the studio. I’ve been, like, bringing people in — like secret people. Like, working on little things. But I’ve just been, like, making it for fun for right now. But soon, something will happen I promise. Something will happen.”
