As Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar take the stage for the historic Hip-Hop themed Halftime Show at Super Bowl LVI, another historic first will take place. Deaf rapper Sean Forbes and fellow deaf rapper Warren (WaWa) Snipe will perform sign-language interpretations of the headliner’s music. This year marks the first time in the history of the 56-year-old game that the NFL has incorporated sign language performances as part of the half time show. Their American Sign Language (ASL) renditions, what the NFL describes as "an elevated accessibility experience," will be viewable at NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
Forbes, who can’t disclose much about the closely guarded halftime set spoke of the historic opportunity with the Detroit Free Press. “The doors to accessibility are busted wide open with something like this.” Forbes does know that he will be accompanying Snoop and Eminem’s appearances. He will be going to Los Angeles on Sunday for a week of rehearsals.
Onstage, Forbes and Wa Wa are more than mere ASL interpreters, they are full-on performers, spirited and expressive, lending the music their own creative flourishes and artistry.
Wa Wa has already had a Super Bowl experience alongside Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church last February with his animated performance of "America The Beautiful." Forbes describes the opportunity as a full circle moment. “Being from Detroit, being part of Eminem’s camp - or even going back to being 12 listening to N.W.A. and Snoop on my Walkman.”
