Jeen-Yuhs, the new Netflix doc that chronicles the early life of Kanye West was released only a few days ago, but the internet is already buzzing about one scene in particular. In a scene 15 minutes into the doc, Ye’s friend and the film’s director/narrator Coodie Simmons follows Kanye into the building that houses Roc A Fella Records. Roc A Fella Records is the label that Jay Z, Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke founded, and it was Jay-Z’s recording home, and Kanye’s future home.

Kanye had just produced a great deal of The Blueprint, Jay Z’s critically acclaimed 6th album and was trying to convince the label that he was also an M.C. The narrator says: “If the world was ever going to hear Kanye’s music, he needed a record deal” as Kanye and Simmons bum rush the office with cameras rolling.

Kanye knocks at the doors to the office, and no one responds, so he lets himself in. As he walks through the office and greets several employees, it’s obvious that most of them are unfamiliar with him. ‘Ye approaches Chaka Pilgrim of Roc A Fellas marketing department and tells her that he wants to play something for her. Kanye pops in a cd and plays the demo for his two times Platinum, Grammy nominated first Top Ten hit “All Falls Down”. As he walks from office to office performing the song, business goes on as usual, and he is virtually ignored.

This scene is a peek into the drive and determination that would catapult Kanye to international superstardom. A listen to his debut album College Dropout will reveal that Kanye was always frustrated with the fact that he was only seen as a producer and he attempted to show anyone who would listen that he had a tandem skillset. This much talked about scene is one of many that reveals the embryonic character of the man that became a giant.

Part 1 of the Jeen-Yuhs trilogy is now streaming on Netflix
