Mattel Sues Rap Snacks Over Nicki Minaj's 'Barbie-Que' Chips

Mattel Inc, the owner of the Barbie franchise is suing the creators of Rap Snacks over Barbie-Que Chips, their collaboration with rapper Nicki Minaj.

In court documents filed over the weekend and obtained by Reuters, Mattel alleges that Rap Snacks launched the "Barbie-Que" Honey Truffle potato chips line, bearing the Barbie signature font, and an image of Minaj wearing a Barbie chain without their authorization or prior knowledge. Mattel also claims that "the blatant and intentional use of Mattel's trademark" will cause consumers to associate Rap Snacks products with Mattel and its Barbie brand and that "false association is enhanced even further" by the snack company's "use of imagery and colors that are associated with the Barbie brand."

Rap Snacks has previously released chips by Master P, Snoop Dogg, The Migos and Lil Baby and can be purchased at Walmart, Sam's Club and online.

"Nicki Minaj is unquestionably one of the most disruptive forces in the history of rap," James Lindsay, CEO of Rap Snacks said in a release. "You're talking about a woman who rewrote the rules of Hip-Hop culture and happens to be a phenomenal entrepreneur as well. It just makes sense that as a brand disrupting the snack industry, we align to push the bar even further. This is the beginning of a legendary partnership."

Rap Snacks also sells noodles and hoodies, and Master P and James Lindsay recently announced their newly formed financial institution called BossUp Bank which seeks to target 63 million Americans who have been refused lending by traditional banking systems.
