Moonlight actor Trevante Rhodes will star as heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in Hulu's new 8 episode series Mike which debuts on August 25. The one minute trailer released by Hulu shows pivotal moments in Tyson's life from his childhood, his time training and segments in the ring to more controversial times like his stint in prison, his marriage to Robin Givens and his biting Evander Holyfield. Showrunner Karin Gist told Entertainment Weekly that the writing team had a goal of digging deeper into the story behind the man that everyone thinks that they know.

According to Gist: "The show is not meant to glorify his life. We were never trying to say that Mike Tyson is a hero or a villain. Our goal was to take a very complicated figure and try to get under the hood of what he was praised and vilified for, while staying true to our North Star of 'no one person is one thing.'" Gist said further that the show is neither a love letter or indictment, which is why they included the good, bad and the complexities of both. Show creator Steven Rogers wrote the pilot episode after I,Tonya his 2017 Oscar nominated movie about controversial athlete Tonya Harding.
