Netflix has given viewers a closer look at their upcoming documentary jeen-yuhs: A Kanye West Trilogy in a new trailer. Directed by filmmaker duo Coodie and Chike, the first act of the series is set to premiere on the streaming platform on February 16.

The preview consists of a montage of never-before-seen footage of the rap icon throughout his career. The film seems to follow Ye’s relationship with the filmmakers as he evolved from backpacker to international superstar.

“It felt like the bigger Kanye got, the farther we grew apart,” Coodie narrates. “But there was more to Kanye’s story I needed to tell.”

Netflix bills jeen-yuhs as an inside look into Ye’s path to becoming the influential rapper and tastemaker he’s known as today:

“Twenty-one years ago, Clarence ‘Coodie’ Simmons met Kanye West and saw something so special that he moved from Chicago to New York City to document Ye’s journey to become the next great rapper. Neither of them had any idea where just how far that journey would take them.”

On Wednesday, Coodie and Chike said that they were denying Kanye’s request for the “final edit and approval” of their film, citing their intent to retain creative control over the project.

“Me and Chike have a company called Creative Control,” Coodie said. “Because you don’t want to lose your creative control.” He added, “God has the final cut.
