Add Snoop Dogg to the list of rap artists who dream of a Sade collabo. From an Inglewood studio, Snoop recently proclaimed that he was “putting the Bat Signal up” and that perhaps Def Jam and Universal (whom he recently formed a relationship with) could make it happen. Between puffs of a blunt Snoop recalls his first and only time attending a Sade concert with Heavy D and LL COOL J, and how elaborate her stage show was with visual effects that had her in the sky and disappearing. When LL and Heavy D offered to hook up a meeting backstage the Doggfather said that he was too nervous and offered the excuse that they needed to leave because there would soon be lots of cars trying to exit the venue soon.
"I went to her concert, I went to see her perform one time," Snoop recalled. "I went with Heavy D and LL COOL J. She had all these visual effects where she disappeared and she was in the top of the sky, she was amazing They were like, 'You wanna go meet her?' I was like, 'Uh uh.'"
Helen Folasade Adu (better known as Sade Adu, legendary frontwoman of her eponymous band) has been the object of Hip-Hop’s attention since her 1984 debut. Whether it’s Stetsasonic’s Daddy-O mentioning her in several rhymes over several albums including “Stet Troop 88” from the “In Full Gear” album (“I buy my clothes at the Gap/I really know how to rap/I like my beer on tap/and I’m on Sade’s strap”) the countless times that Hip-Hop producers have sampled her, or Drake’s Sade tattoos, Hip-Hop has always had a Sade infatuation.
Sade turned down a 2010 request from Jay – Z, telling Billboard “I’m too scared. It’s like the Wizard of Oz – they’ll find out that there’s nothing there.” She said further that the only collaborating that she is interested in is with her band. She does welcome those who wish to sample her and she says that as far as sample clearance she’s the “cheapest chick in the west.”
