Snootie Wild, the Memphis rapper born LePreston Porter who saw success with 2013 singles "Made Me" and "Yayo," has died at age 36 after being shot in Houston, TX. The sad news was confirmed Saturday (Feb. 26) night on the CMG artist’s verified Instagram page.
“Gone in body, but your NAME & LEGACY will live forever!” the caption read. “💙 #TeamYayo4Life💯.”
Reports indicate that a shooting occurred after the rapper was involved in an altercation with another individual. A verbal confrontation ensued after Snootie reportedly backed into a ditch; and according to ABC 13, a neighbor captured the shooting on video. Authorities are currently reviewing the footage.
“It looks like he backed in there (the ditch) accidentally,” Houston Police Department Lt. R. Willkens said. “Then the other vehicle pulled up, and folks got out of the car. They were talking for a little bit, and then all of a sudden, gunfire went off. Only one shot, actually.”
Snootie broke through in 2014 with his Yo Gotti-assisted single “Yayo” and “Made Me.” He signed with Gotti’s CMG imprint in 2013, and dropped his debut EP Go Mode, and by his 2015 mixtape Ain’t No Stoppin’ Me.
The Memphis Hip-Hop scene was recently devastated by the murder of Young Dolph in November. It’s unclear if the HPD has identified any suspects. Notables such as Phonte, DJ Paul and LaChat mourned the loss of the rapper.
