Modern-day renaissance man, Tyler, the Creator, has been known to wear his influences on his sleeve since the beginning of his career. Taking jazz and neo-soul influence from artists like Erykah Badu and Roy Ayers, indie-rock influences from artists like Tame Impala and Vampire Weekend, and most notably production influence from Pharrell Williams, Tyler is respected for his ability to be versatile while creating a cohesive sonic universe.
On Wednesday (March 2), Converse released a wide-ranging interview and fan Q&A with Tyler, where the California emcee spoke on everything from his creative process, to his thoughts on the growing NFT space. When asked if he has any unreleased projects that he has not been able to release, he answered no, however, revealed he recorded a scraped indie rock album in 2012, which would later become his 2013 album, Wolf.
“I started a Bossa Nova album. And, like, a indie rock—that sounds weird to say—indie rock album in 2013, in 2012. … I have that in the can that I’ve never put out.”
Tyler’s most recent album, Call Me if You Get Lost, finds the artist back in his rapping bag, after two albums exploring more jazz and pop elements. The album was met with critical acclaim for Tyler’s elite rapping and world-building on the project and everything surrounding it from his, Golf Le Fleur fashion brand to his extravagant, Broadway-worthy live tour.
